Land Rover Discovery: Front Suspension Wheel Knuckle (G1778608) - Removal

Removal

CAUTIONS:

  • Nuts and bolts must be tightened with the weight of the vehicle on the suspension.
  • Do not allow halfshafts to hang unsupported at one end or joint damage will occur.
  • Make sure the halfshaft constant velocity (CV) joints do not over articulate. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the CV joints.

NOTE:

If a new knuckle is installed, a new wheel bearing must be installed.

All vehicles

WARNING:

Make sure to support the vehicle with axle stands.

Raise and support the vehicle.

Refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).

CAUTIONS:

  • Discard the nut.
  • Make sure that the ball joint ball does not rotate.

NOTES:

  • Apply the brake pedal during the removal and installation of the half shaft retaining nut.
  • Retain the nut for use in the installation procedure.

CAUTIONS:

  • Make sure that the brake hose does not support the full weight of the brake caliper assembly.
  • Discard the bolts.

Tie aside with a suitable tie strap.

CAUTION:

Discard the bolt and nut.

CAUTION:

Make sure that the ball joint seal is not damaged.

CAUTIONS:

  • Make sure that the driveshaft is supported with suitable retaining straps.
  • Do not use a hammer to detach the halfshaft from the hub assembly, failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the halfshaft.

  • Make sure that the ball joint ball does not rotate.
  • Discard the nut.

CAUTION:

Care must be taken not to damage the surrounding components when inserting the special tool.

Make sure the wiring harness and electrical connectors are not damaged during this operation.
